ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - De a cuerdo a nuevas cifras por parte del gobierno, durante enero la economía siguió perdiendo empleos – y líderes de Nuevo México dicen que los gobiernos de ciudades y condados junto con las organizaciones sin fines de lucro tienen el potencial de poder emplear a personas rápidamente. El Concejal de la Ciudad de Albuquerque, Ray Garduño, dice que las municipalidades como la Ciudad Duke conocen las necesidades y su ciudad bien, y con frecuencia tienen proyectos que están en espera de fondos para poder proveer empleos.

"Ya sean las calles, la infraestructura, sean servicios que podemos ofrecer a las personas que están buscando empleo."

Garduño añade que la tasa de desempleo de Nuevo México se ha más que duplicado desde que comenzó la recesión. Dice que la ciudad de Albuquerque tiene una lista de proyectos que pudieran comenzar de inmediato con los nuevos fondos federales, pero dice que hay otras organizaciones en Nuevo México que pudiesen también emplear a personas de inmediato.

"Organizaciones sin fines de lucro que tienen ya programas implementados con la capacidad de emplear a miembros de la comunidad rápidamente. Los pequeños negocios, que son los que sustentan al país, pueden también emplear a la gente."

Comenta Garduño que le gustaría ver que la financiación de cuentas de ley de gastos federales, como el paquete de estímulo o la nueva cuenta de ley para crear empleos, fueran directamente a la creación de empleos locales en lugar de ser pasada por el gobierno estatal, el cual dice que puede causar demoras innecesarias. Estas demoras no son por culpa del estado, si no por crear una capa extra de burocracia.
