Dealing With Grief After Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The reporters have left Montcoal, but grief is just setting in for the families and friends who lost loved ones in the Upper Big Branch mine disaster two weeks ago. Mike Dupay, bereavement director with Kanawha Hospice Care, says they will offer free counseling in the area.

Dupay describes grief as a slow process full of fits and starts. He says we should give people room to work through their emotions, and if they want to talk, listen.

"Grief shared is grief diminished. Talk about the loved one, talk about their pain, talk about what they're experiencing, talk about their sleepless nights, talk about what's on their minds as they wake up in the morning."

Dupay says one thing to remember is that people in grief can forget to take care of themselves, or at times seem hypersensitive.

"Grief can be a consuming experience. We have to make a conscious effort to get up out of bed in the morning to face the day, because as we're facing the day, we're also facing a day filled with unbelievable pain."

Dupay says children grieve in their own way, and it often varies according to their own state of development.

"Often children will come to the adults with questions, then once they're satisfied with that answer, they'll process that for a while and then they'll come back with additional questions."

Dupay says it's kind of like walking with someone on a long journey: You can't tell them how to get there, you just have to go with them.

He encourages anyone with a question to get in touch with Kanawha Hospice Care at www.hospicecarewv.org.
