Fed Report: IA Birth Rate Drops, Cesarean Deliveries Continue to Climb

DES MOINES, Iowa - There are fewer babies being born, but more surgical births. The National Center for Health Statistics has released a new report that indicates the birth rate in most states, including Iowa, has declined. However, the number of cesarean births has risen for the twelfth year in a row, to a rate of just over 32 percent.

Krista Cornish Scott is education director for the International Cesarean Awareness Network, which provides support to women who've given birth surgically, as well as help for women who want to have a normal birth after a previous cesarean.

"Everybody wants to believe that their care provider made the right call about their cesarean, but I think the numbers really speak for themselves. They keep going up and up and up, and not all of those cesareans can be those truly life-saving cesareans, which we're glad we have when they're needed."

Scott believes the rising rate is, at least in part, the result of hospital policies that don't allow women to give birth normally if they've had a previous cesarean birth. That's the situation at most Iowa hospitals, she adds.

She says research also shows that a medically-unnecessary cesarean puts a woman and baby at risk for complications, because it is a major abdominal surgery that can include long-term health risks for the mother, such as adhesions and bowel obstructions.

"I don't think we'll really, fully understand the true danger of a cesarean until we're a couple decades out, and we see all of these women coming into the doctor with difficulties that are related to the previous surgery - which can be, literally, decades in the past."

April is Cesarean Awareness Month, as designated by Iowa Governor Chet Culver. The National Vital Statistics report is at www.cdc.gov.
