Un simulacro de derrame petrolero se dirige a Nuevo México

ALBUQUERQUE - Dicen que el actual derrame masivo de petróleo no es un problema sólo de los estados de la costa del golfo, y para reforzar la idea, el Sierra Club de Nuevo México escenifica un derrame petrolero hoy en Albuquerque. Pero no hay por qué preocuparse, ya que no se trata de un derrame real sino de una representación hecha mediante plástico negro, que tendrá lugar frente a la oficina del Senador Jeff Bingaman en Duke City.

Shrayas Jatkar, organizador del Sierra Club, comenta que Bingaman ejerce un poderoso liderazgo en el Comité Senatorial de Energía y Recursos Naturales, influencia que pudiera servir para que en un futuro los Neomexicanos lleguen a jugar un papel importante en la prevención de desastres como este.

"Queremos ver que se prohiba toda nueva perforación marina, queremos ver un plan integral para el futuro de la energía que realmente invierta en energía limpia y, de hecho, el fin de subsidios y dádivas a la industria petrolera."

Asegura que la demostración sólo trata de expresar su apoyo a los residentes de la costa del golfo, quienes enfrentan la pérdida de sus industrias pesquera y turística, que son vitales para ellos, debido al desastre petrolero. El simulacro de derrame y la manifestación están programados para las 12 del día, frente a la oficina de Bingaman situada entre las calles 6a y 7a, en Albuquerque.

Jatkar dice que el derrame refuerza aún más el argumento de que la política energética necesita alejarse de las actividades riesgosas como la perforación en aguas profundas, hacia fuentes más renovables. Y agrega que Nuevo México puede asumir el liderazgo.

"Específicamente, Nuevo México tiene algo de capacidad para encabezar nuestra transición hacia combustibles más limpios para transportación, biocombustibles avanzados que verdaderamente pueden sacarnos del petróleo."

El simulacro de derrame busca manifestar su apoyo a las comunidades de la costa del golfo y señalar la relación que existe entre el desastre petrolero y el papel que tiene Nuevo México en la política energética nacional.
