Prescription for Safer Meds: More Authority for the FDA

BOISE, Idaho - News about medication recalls has been common recently. According to the Pew Prescription Project, drug recalls are up 400 percent in a year.

At the same time, a new survey shows 89 percent of Americans want the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to have stronger authority to recall potentially unsafe or contaminated medications. Project Director Allan Coukell says the poll also found widespread mistrust of the quality of medication ingredients manufactured in China and India — and up to 80 percent of components are coming from overseas.

"In the current environment, I don't think it's an automatic given that Americans across the political spectrum would support increased authority for a federal agency."

The U.S. Senate is set to take a closer look at the issue, with the introduction of the Drug Safety and Accountability Act on Tuesday. The manufacturer of several Children's Tylenol products issued recalls earlier this year, and bill sponsor Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) says that was the inspiration for him to pursue legislation. He has three young daughters. In addition to recall authority, Bennet says the bill also gives additional powers to the FDA.

"The ability to subpoena documents and witnesses, the ability to assess civil penalties and better systems to receive information from other regulatory authorities."

The trade group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America issued a statement in response to the bill, saying, "The U.S. regulatory system for prescription drugs is the toughest and safest in the world."
