New Funding to Save or Restore Over 3,800 VA Education Jobs

RICHMOND, Va. - Congress took a break from their summer break last week to return to Washington to vote on an education funding bill, which passed and will add critical funding to the budgets of Virginia and many other states. Virginia is expected to receive just over $246 million in additional federal funds, which could save or restore more than 3,800 jobs, says Dr. Kitty Boitnott, the president of the Virginia Education Association.

"We're very, very encouraged that this legislation will allow school divisions to restore some programs that were on the chopping block, perhaps to help reduce class size, and to recall some of the teachers and other school employees who had already been given their pink slips."

Boitnott says that although the money will not eliminate all school lay-offs, it will certainly help the students in classrooms and be good for the state's economy by keeping people employed. She adds that while some argued against the funding in the face of a growing deficit, education should be one of the last places we make compromises.

"And that means that it's up to us as adults. We have a moral obligation and a duty, a social duty, to make sure that every child who is in our care, in our classrooms, receives the best possible eduction that they can receive."

Boitnott says that many of the job cuts were to support staff positions, and some of the money will go to restoring them. She says providing aid to teachers is crucial during these times of increasing class sizes. Six of Virginia's 11 representatives in Congress voted in favor of the funding as did both Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb. The legislation is expected to save about 160,000 jobs nationwide.

In a statement last week, President Obama announced that the money approved for the states is fully paid for, in part by closing tax loopholes that encourage corporations to ship American jobs overseas.
