New MO Law Fights Rate of Sexually Transmitted Infections

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - A new tool is available for Missouri doctors to help reduce the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the state. According to Paula Gianino, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region, the infection rate is starting to decrease but remains epidemic.

She sees hope in a new state law going into effect Aug. 28, called the Expedited Partner Therapy law, because it allows doctors to treat sex partners of patients diagnosed with an STI without giving the partner a health exam.

"This new law gives us two times, if you will, to provide protection. We not only treat the patient who is in our facility, but we can send that patient home with medication to give to their partner. That is double bang for the buck."

Gianino says studies show one in two sexually active young adults will get an STI by the age of 25, and most will be infected unknowingly. Although doctors prefer to meet both partners face-to-face, they consider the Expedited Partner Therapy strategy a useful alternative, she adds.

Gianino says medical complications can arise from STIs, such as chronic pelvic pain and infertility. If left untreated, certain infections like syphilis can be fatal, she warns.

"STIs are a very huge public health issue that costs our state millions of dollars a year and cost insurance plans tens of millions of dollars a year."

The federal Centers for Disease Control reports that Missouri is the 26th state to enact this type of law.
