Childhood Obesity: More than 1 in 3 Ohioans Affected

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Nearly one in three American children are overweight or obese, a statistic reported in "Understanding Childhood Obesity," published this year by the American Heart Association. The problem is even worse in Ohio, where the childhood obesity rate is close to 36 percent for children ages 10 to 17, according to a study from University Hospitals, Cleveland.

That's why Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio (Dist. 11), co-sponsored a resolution designating this September the first-ever National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Congresswoman Fudge says dedicating at least one month per year to educating Americans about the crisis will help maximize the impact of programs, activities and campaigns - all aligned with the sole purpose of eradicating childhood obesity.

"You're looking at children who will have either physical or mental challenges most of their lives if they don't do something about their weight. We're looking at the potential of having the first generation of children in this country who will have shorter lifespans then their parents."

This weekend, she will announce a new bill called "Fit for LIFE," aimed at improving children's health in low-income, rural and Native American communities.

Meanwhile, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., is supporting reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act and is introducing the "Healthy Kids All the Time Act." If passed, this legislation will help ensure that healthier foods will be served before, during and after the school day, he says.

"I don't mind an occasional bake sale myself, but what we're seeing is people selling Oreos to raise money. I don't want unhealthy foods competing with healthy school breakfasts and healthy school lunches."

According to the Centers for Disease Control, treatment of obesity-related illnesses and conditions costs the United States an estimated $147 billion every year.
