CO Supports Tighter Regulation for the Oil and Gas Industry

DENVER - Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced two new rules Thursday to improve the safety of offshore oil and natural gas drilling, but a majority of Coloradans would like to see tougher standards onshore as well. A new poll finds two-thirds of voters statewide think that the industry should meet tougher standards for drilling in Colorado.

John Gale is regional rep for the National Wildlife Federation. He says offshore drilling -- and the potential problems it can cause -- has been at the forefront of public attention recently because of the BP oil spill in the Gulf.

"We need to be looking at our onshore practices as well so that we can ensure the same public health and safety standards in addition to looking at the natural resources impacts, so that we preserve the integrity of wildlife and habitat for future generations."

There have been 1,000 oil and natural gas spills and accidents in Colorado since 2008.

Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates conducted the poll with 462 voters statewide. David Metz says pollsters found what he calls a "striking consensus."

"We've got solid majorities of voters in Colorado cutting across party lines, geographic lines, gender lines speaking out in favor of higher standards for safety and accountability."

The oil and gas industry claim tighter regulations will slow growth and kill jobs. But Gale says protecting Colorado's wildlife and wild areas preserve another job generator: hunting and fishing bring in nearly $1.8 billion statewide and employs about 21,000 people.

"Colorado's really sending a strong signal to other states that work with energy developers that it can be done in the right way and it's not driving away jobs."

The poll was sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation.
