Missouri Takes On Teen Suicides, Bullying

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A Safe Schools Coalition in Missouri is working to make sure the five recent high-profile suicides of GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transvestite) teens in the U.S. do not become part of a larger trend. Several candlelight vigils will take place starting Sunday in Kansas City, Springfield and Kirksville to show troubled teens there is support available and to identify changes needed to reduce the number of teen suicides.

Morgan Keenan, safe schools coordinator with Promo Fund, says the Safe Schools Coalition is working on a bill, the Safe Schools Act, that addresses bullying based on specific categories such as race, religion, disabilities and sexual orientation.

"The safe schools bill is so closely related to the suicides that are happening. Kids feel alone in their schools because they're bullied. Kids feel alone in their families and other places."

Keenan says this Safe Schools Act is similar to one that failed to make it out of committee during the 2010 session. Opponents of such legislation say it promotes homosexuality, but supporters say a law that defines categories is projected to reduce bullying by 30 percent. A recent survey found that lesbian, gay and bisexual youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.

Keenan says a safe schools act gives teachers the tools they need.

"It's going to give our teachers the ammunition to really talk about bullying in their schools, and it's going to be giving them the ammunition to really talk about things that are important."

Keenan says the safe schools coalition is sponsoring a youth empowerment summit in November to help teens break out of their isolation.

"That's so important. To not only tell them they have value, but also tell them 'You can be the leader of your student government organization; you can be a leader of your peers.'"

Keenan says the Safe Schools Coalition is a broad-based group that includes people from the faith community, disability advocates and GLBT community.
