‘Tis the Season for Medicare Drug Plan Sign-Up

COVINGTON, Kent. - Seniors will soon be sifting through the options for Medicare Part D, the prescription drug plan, during the six-week open enrollment period that begins Monday. Free counseling is available to help seniors make their decision on which plan to choose.

Counselors like Stephanie Langguth with SHIP, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, help Medicare recipients compare the plans.

"Medicare is a personalized choice. Every person has different health care conditions. Every person has different drugs that they need to take. And, so, each person, even a husband and wife, may not be on the same Medicare drug plan."

Langguth notes under the Part D plan this year, beneficiaries are covered up to $2,840. When that amount is reached, recipients pay out of pocket the full cost up to $4,550 when catastrophic coverage kicks in. She adds that 129,000 Kentuckians fall in that "donut hole," as it's called.

She says the new health care reform law will cushion the blow.

"In 2011, when someone hits that gap, instead of paying 100-percent of the cost of their drugs during the gap in coverage, they only have to pay 50-percent of the cost of name brand drugs and they get a seven percent discount off of generic prescriptions."

Langguth says SHIP counselors can help seniors apply for benefits under the Extra Help program offered by Social Security that yields an average per person savings of $3,500 each year.

"And actually, quite a few people are eligible and they don't realize that that program even exists. And so we screen every person that we talk with to see if they're eligible for Extra Help from Social Security. If they are, they have no gap in coverage and they get help to pay for their prescriptions."

Langguth says SHIP is offering free enrollment clinics to advise seniors on plan options. More information at www.lablaw.org/SHIP or by calling 1-877-293-7447 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1-877-293-7447 end_of_the_skype_highlighting
