CHICAGO - Immigration reform advocates in Illinois are taking matters into their own hands by meeting with leaders in the Illinois congressional delegation to push for the DREAM Act.

Eighteen-year-old Arianna Salgado is an undocumented high school student who has been in the U.S. since she was six. She's working with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights in their campaign to get the legislation passed, which would allow a path to citizenship for undocumented youth who have been in the country for at least five years and have either graduated from high school or earned a GED.

"All we want to do is be able to contribute back to this country because this is the country that we consider home. We are still proud of our heritage, but most of us left our country when we were really young, and this is the country that we have learned to call home."

As a high school senior looking to attend college, Salgado is feeling the direct impact of the nation's lack of immigration reform.

"I don't qualify for any help from the government at all when it comes to being able to pay for tuition. So, that's one of the biggest difficulties because I have the grades to be able to go to those schools, but I can't afford it."

Under the Act, these young adults must also attend college or serve in the military for two years.
