Missouri Teens Respond to Bullying with Youth Summit

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Concerns about bullying in school, especially for LGBT youth, have teens across Missouri rallying in Columbia this weekend for a Youth Empowerment Summit. Morgan Keenan, Safe Schools Coalition coordinator for Promo Fund, helped organize the event. He says teens have sought tools to combat bullying long before teen suicides related to bullying made national headlines.

"The Youth Empowerment Summit kind of flips the issue on its head. It empowers young people who at one time might be bullied for one reason or another. It tells them, 'You're worth something. Not only are you worth something, but I think you could be a leader.'"

Keenan says a Safe Schools bill would give kids and educators the tools needed to help prevent bullying in the classroom and protect young people who might be targets because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or race.

The summit takes place Saturday on the University of Missouri campus, and it's free for anyone under the age of 22. Keenan says it should be empowering for teens, because some of them are leading the workshops.

"Part of what has been so great about this is they take control of this youth summit and it's their event."

Keenan hopes that educating young people about a Safe Schools bill will help it succeed this legislative session. A similar bill never made it out of committee last year. New York and North Carolina recently passed anti-bullying laws that focus on specific categories of students who are often targeted by bullies.
