RICHMOND, Va. - More money for teachers and workers in public schools across the state. That's what the Virginia Education Association wants from the General Assembly.

Dr. Kitty Boitnott, the Association president, points out that teachers, as well as support staff, have not received a salary increase in three years. Other state employees received a 3 percent salary bonus this year, she says.

"The time has come for our teachers and our support personnel to be compensated for doing the extra work they're being asked to do as a result of the layoffs and attrition that have occurred, also in the last three years."

About 5,000 staff positions have been cut, Boitnott says, while class sizes have increased in many areas of the state, which has placed a burden on teachers as well as students. She worries that without more competitive salaries, schools will have a difficult time recruiting young and qualified teachers going forward.

A 3 percent across-the-board salary increase would add about $110 million dollars to the budget per year for the biennium, Boitnott calculates.

"In the grand scheme of things, that's not a lot of money. It's just a matter of setting priorities. Frankly, it's a matter of people in leadership positions getting clear on the fact that 'tax' is not a dirty word."

Boitnott adds that with some adjustments to the tax codes, and by closing some corporate tax loopholes, much-needed revenue could flow into the state for schools and other programs.
