GREAT FALLS, Mont. - A made-in-Montana Christmas wish card from nearly 500 ranchers, hunters, and small business owners has landed on the desks of the state's congressional delegation, thanking them for considering the Rocky Mountain Front Heritage Act, and asking them for their support next year.

The proposal was hashed out by local people over three years of meetings. The plan would keep working lands in business, help control noxious weeds, and designate some areas as wilderness.

Mike Aderhold, a card signer, is the former Region 4 director for Fish, Wildlife and Parks, a region that includes the Front.

"It is the richest wildlife country in Montana, and among the top one percent of the wildlife country in the whole United States."

Aderhold also calls the Front a sportsmen's paradise that is worth more than $10 million a year to the region, because of high-quality hunting and fishing.

Aderhold says conservation for the Front is really nothing new. He points to nearly a century of such efforts for the area, starting with the Sun River Preservation in 1913.

"From that time on, in every decade, there's been efforts to protect this country."

The Act has been waiting for a sponsor since its unveiling a little over a year ago. The wilderness designations are the most controversial.
