Business Leaders Say 'Cuts Only' Budget Cuts Out Business

RALEIGH, N.C. - Several North Carolina business leaders are asking Gov. Beverly Perdue to avoid a cuts-only approach to the state's $3.7 billion budget shortfall. Their letter, which arrived on Perdue's desk Wednesday morning, emphasizes the impact extreme budget cuts could have on the state's business climate.

Mitchell Gold, co-founder of Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, a furniture manufacturer in Taylorsville, says public investments in the state create opportunities for businesses to thrive.

"A business-friendly state does not mean that there are no taxes. And a business-friendly state means that there is a good feeder system for future employees."

Among the areas where budget cuts are expected are education, community programs and business development initiatives. The business leaders are asking the governor to also consider revenue-raising strategies. Their letter also emphasizes recent improvements to public education and quality early-childhood programs.

Gold says many other business owners understand the benefit of good public investment, and he disagrees with the cuts-only approach.

"All they want to do is cut the budget and not care about the infrastructure of our state, and the reality is that we can afford to pay our fair share of taxes."

Forbes magazine ranks North Carolina as one of the top three states for business climate, but the letter to Perdue says business leaders are concerned that extensive cuts could hurt that standing. Businesses from across the state and numerous industries backed the letter, which can be viewed at togethernc.org.
