Tennessee Teens Learn About Mothering From Media

February 3, 2011

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Reality TV star Kim Kardashian recently blasted what she called the "glamorization of teen pregnancy" on the popular MTV reality shows "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom." The latter features a teenage mother from Tennessee.

Seventeen-year-old Nashville High School senior Justin London says he has seen the programs, and while he's not a big fan, he understands how some young women could base decisions on pregnancy because of the programs.

"These days, teens are easily swayed by what they see on TV. I think they're very liable to make their decision based on what they see on the show."

Kardashian also pointed to the MTV hits as possible reasons for a recent increase in teen pregnancies at a Memphis high school, where 90 young female students are either pregnant or have given birth this year.

London notes that the shows can be positive, however, because they are opportunities for parents to talk with their children about sexual health issues.

"I think the underlying, like, purpose of the program is to show there are options and ways to handle that situation."
