Great Outdoors: Value for Colorado's Future

DENVER - The "America's Great Outdoors" initiative has been unveiled, after months of gathering public input in Colorado and across the country. The project aims to protect a wide variety of outdoor spaces - from urban parks to undeveloped wilderness - and engage future generations in outdoor activities, including those in Colorado.

America's Great Outdoors offers what it calls a promise to future generations, outlining ways to improve Americans' connection with and stewardship of outdoor tracts, including those in Colorado.

Stacie Gilmore, co-founder of Environmental Learning for Kids in Denver, says this week's report echoes what she's seen first-hand: the importance of getting children excited about the world around them.

"It's really a huge ripple effect. Once you start introducing them to the outdoors, it ties into their education. They want to do better in schools, and go on to college so that they can get a good job."

The report makes several recommendations, including establishment of a Youth Conservation Corps to act as stewards of the outdoors, and bolstering the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Outdoors tourism is an important economic engine for Colorado. According to the Colorado Tourism Office, winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding account for about one-third of all tourist dollars spent in the state. Al White, the tourism office's director, says the benefit isn't limited to popular destinations such as ski resorts or communities surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park or the Colorado National Monument. He adds that Burlington's preserved prairie village and 100-year-old restored carousel stand to benefit, as does Bent's Old Fort, a historic fur-trapping site.

"Colorado is the number-one outdoor destination in the United States, and for good reason when you look at all the scenic beauty we have."

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar held listening sessions around the country, including in Colorado, to get public feedback about the outdoors. Gilmore brought about 50 students from her program to the session in Denver. Their emphasis: The "great outdoors" can be found in mountains and wildlands, but also in urban spaces.

"Our students used their time to really use their voice and to be heard. They were very vocal on that, that they want to learn about and appreciate the outdoors and nature that is close to home."

That student suggestion showed up in the final report, which recommends establishing urban parks and community green spaces.

The America's Great Outdoors initiative is outlined online at americasgreatoutdoors.gov.
