COLUMBUS, Ohio - Hundreds of Ohioans are coming together at the Statehouse today to make their voices heard regarding Governor John Kasich's recently announced budget. Ohio faces a $8 billion budget deficit and, if approved, the governor's two-year budget proposal would cut funds to local governments by 50 percent over two years.

Bill Padisak, who heads the Mahoning County Central Labor Council, says it's a move that would put struggling communities in an even tougher position than they already have.

"It's up to local governments that are either going to have to pass levies for these services or cut them. And so, rather than doing the responsible thing and funding essential services, they're just passing the buck to local governments."

According to the governor, the proposal would save the state more than $550 million over two years. Padisak and others say the budget crisis needs longer-term solutions that include generating revenue by balancing corporate and personal tax contributions.

Padisak hopes today's event will show Ohioans that it's time to pay even closer attention to what's going on with the state's economy.

"Due to the irresponsible way the Legislature has handled taxes in Ohio and economic development over the past 20-some years, we have a revenue crisis, and we need the public to see that."

The budget reduction also affects human services such as kinship care, which helps keep children out of foster care.

Loretta Hunter of Cleveland says this budget item affects many aspects of her life as a caregiver raising her grandchildren.

"I'm 62; I'm facing cuts with my Medicare; I'm facing cuts with my Medicaid. They're not giving me enough money to care for my grandchildren. I'm even thinking about sending my grandson out of state to live."

Hunter says investments in child welfare and families are critical to the future of communities like hers.

"We need safe and stable families; that's what the neighborhoods need, because if you can't keep safe and stable families, then the neighborhoods are going to die."

The rally begins at noon outside the Statehouse.
