SEELEY LAKE, Mont. - A new forest restoration program means new jobs for Montana, and there's a workshop starting Tuesday to help people and companies win those positions. Most of the work will be by contract in the Southwestern Crown of the Continent, which encompasses parts of the Lolo, Helena and Flathead National Forests.

Erin Zwiener, forestry coordinator for the Blackfoot Challenge, one of the workshop sponsors, describes potential projects, which will take place on private and public land.

"It'll include removing trees that create a fire hazard, road deconstruction work on Forest Service ground, stream restoration, as well as noxious weed treatment."

Zwiener isn't shy in being clear that the paperwork connected to the contracts can be confusing, which is why the workshop time will mostly be spent on that process.

"The Forest Service contracting process, in particular, can involve a little bit of a learning curve for contractors who haven't had experience with it in the past."

The two-day workshop is free, and provides background and tips on how to present winning bids. Zwiener says some of the projects could last several years. The first round of contracts is expected to be up for bid in the coming months.

The workshop is Tuesday and Wednesday at the Seeley Lake Community Center.

Other co-sponsors include: The Wilderness Society, Clearwater Resource Council, U.S. Forest Service, Missoula County Rural Initiative, Montana Community Development Corporation, Montana Logging Association, Northwest Connections, and the Swan Ecosystem Center.
