Oxfam WA: Table for Nine Billion, Please!

June 2, 2011

SEATTLE - It won't be a new restaurant opening at the Broadway Farmers Market this Sunday - but it will look like one.

Oxfam Action Corps Seattle will set up a fine-dining table display at the market as part of "Table for Nine Billion," an event to draw attention to its global GROW campaign to ease a worldwide hunger crisis.

Oxfam volunteer Ashley Rogers, who helped organize the event, says there's a good reason the table needs to be set for 9 billion patrons.

"The United Nations projects that by the year 2050 there will be 9 billion people on the planet."

Record spikes in food prices this year have hit Washington consumers hard, Rogers says, and have already pushed 44 million people into poverty around the world. Oxfam says nearly 1 billion people worldwide go to bed hungry every night.

The "Table for Nine Billion" will feature menus that carry an important message on world hunger, says Oxfam volunteer Christine Ellersick, a problem she says is more than just a food-production issue.

"Access to the food, and pricing of the food, and transport of the food."

When the population hits 9 billion, Oxfam says, global demand for food will increase by up to 70 percent.

Specifics on the GROW plan are online at oxfamamerica.org.
