DES MOINES, Iowa – De acuerdo a las estadísticas nacionales más recientes, el número de abortos en los Estados Unidos cayó un 8 por ciento entre los años 2000 y 2008; pero dio un brinco del 18 por ciento entre las mujeres pobres, llegando a casi la mitad del total. La razón principal pudiera ser tan simple como la falta de acceso al control natal. Penny Dickey, jefa ejecutiva de operaciones en Planned Parenthoor del Heartland, dice que en las zonas rurales de Iowa el acceso a la planificación familiar es particularmente difícil para las mujeres de bajos ingresos, las cuales no tienen medios para viajar largas distancias hasta donde puedan encontrar servicios médicos.

"El acceso es la gran clave. El acceso a los anticonceptivos es algo que, si pudiéramos mejorar, podríamos ayudar a reducir el número de embarazos no planeados."

Dickey dice que Planned Parenthood del Heartland tiene un programa llamado "c-mail" para ayudar a las mujeres de Iowa a satisfacer esta necesidad. Las clientas pueden hacerse un examen anual en cualquier centro de salud Heartland de Iowa y luego se les envía por correo a su hogar una receta mensual para el control natal. Y agrega que evitar los embarazos no deseados le ahorra dinero a quienes pagan impuestos.

"Por cada dólar que se invierte en reducir los embarazos no intencionales, el estado ahorra cuatro dólares que luego se tendrían que invertir en cuidados por un embarazo no planeado."

La Iowa Family Planning Network (Red de Planeación Familiar de Iowa) también ayuda a solventar los costos de atención a las mujeres que no pueden pagar el control natal, ofreciéndoles anticonceptivos gratis o a un precio menor, a las que califican.
