DES MOINES, Iowa – Lesbianas, gays, bisexuales y transexuales (LGBT) de Iowa frecuentemente evitan la rutina del chequeo médico porque no tienen seguro o porque se sienten incómodos de ir a un doctor común. Para ellos, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland (Paternidad Planeada del Heartland) ofrece atención médica con calidad y sin preguntas.

Hay un estigma en el estado que evita que los miembros de la comunidad LGBT busquen atención médica. Hay quienes pueden tener problemas con la cobertura de su seguro o no quieren ser discriminados al acudir al médico. El doctor Joe Freund recientemente se incorporó al equipo de Planned Parenthood of the Heartland (Paternidad Planeada del Heartland) como parte de un esfuerzo por brindar servicios médicos a miembros de esa comunidad. Dice que evitar los exámenes de rutina no es algo raro para ellos.

"Especialmente para las lesbianas, uno de los detalles es que pueden no hacerse el chequeo de rutina, el 'pap smears' que otras se hacen, porque tal vez no busquen atención médica para cosas como el control natal."

Explica que Paternidad Planeada brinda servicios en clínicas de todo el estado, lo cual permite que los pacientes LGBT reciban tratamiento sin temer que su preferencia sexual sea un problema.

"Podemos darle servicio a personas en sus comunidades cuando no puedan salir. Pueden venir a nuestras clínicas y recibir buena atención sin ser juzgadas y sin la preocupación de si algo va a salir a sus comunidades o no."

Freund dice que todo el equipo ha recibido capacitación y advertencias sobre las principales preocupaciones y cómo hablarle a los pacientes LGBT, para tranquilizarlos cuando acuden a las clínicas de Paternidad Planeada.
