Summit Addresses "Hunger Epidemic" Among Older Ohioans

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Many worked for decades to save for retirement, but instead of enjoying their golden years, increasing numbers of older Ohioans are part of what's being called a "mounting hunger epidemic."

Nora Nees, director of child and senior nutrition services for the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks, says they've seen an increase of over 50 percent in the number of older adults seeking food assistance since 2006. She says there are a number of barriers that keep others from obtaining proper nutrition.

"When you live on a low fixed income, any increase in the cost of living - whether that's food, whether that's gas for transportation, whether that is housing cost - will dramatically affect your ability to put food on the table."

To address the problem, food advocates and leaders, including U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Kevin Concannon, are gathering today for the first-ever Ohio Senior Hunger Summit.

Nees says that in Ohio there are solid partnerships and programs working to meet the nutritional needs of older adults, such as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which provides a monthly food box. But, she adds, many seniors are unaware that help is out there.

"Some of the myths about food assistance and the programs out there, combined with low incomes and lack of knowledge about some of the programs that are available, are really increasing the hunger and malnutrition among our older adults."

Nees says the hunger "summit" is timely, as an increasing number of Baby Boomers retire, because no one is sure how the recession will affect their retirement incomes.

"They may not have time to make up that loss in their savings. If they lost their job, it's going to be much harder for them to become employed, and really difficult to become employed at a salary that matched their former salary."

Nees says they will discuss ways to maximize federal nutrition programs and partnerships throughout Ohio to combat hunger among the elderly. And they're already planning a second "summit" for this Fall.

Today's even will be held at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
