Hoy habrá una audiencia sobre la cuenta de ley de Seguridad Nacional H.R. 1505 en el Comité de Recursos Naturales de la Cámara de Representantes. Esta ley expandiría los poderes del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (Department of Homeland Security, DHS) para no aplicar 36 leyes medioambientales, incluyendo la Ley de Agua Limpia, dentro de un área de 100 millas en las costas y fronteras. La anterior directora del Departamento del Interior (Department of the Interior, DOI) Lynn Scarlett, ha revisado la ley y dice que apoya mejorar la seguridad en la frontera, pero cree que darle la autoridad a solo una agencia federal a que ignore leyes, agencias federales, estatales y locales -es algo riesgoso. Habla sobre posibles daños a lugares como el Parque Nacional de las Cavernas Carlsbad, y límites en la cacería y pesca recreativas, además de derechos de pastoreo en terrenos públicos en las fronteras y aguas, y más.

"El peligro es que la seguridad nacional en si va a sufrir. Hay mucha sabiduría en estas agencias de regulación estatal, local y federal que ya están ahí –tienen la experiencia y el saber que podrá en verdad ayudar."

Anterior funcionario del Departamento del Interior durante la administración de Clinton John Leshy, dice que esta ley no es necesaria y señala como socava leyes de gerencia de tierras públicas y medioambientales que también alcanzan propiedades privadas.

"Todas estas leyes medioambientales que tienen el riesgo de ser ignoradas son flexibles. Pueden acomodar dentro de las ya existentes leyes las preocupaciones de seguridad nacional. Los que saben de las tierras públicas pueden sentarse con los del DHS y trabajar todos juntos. Ellos está cooperando y colaborando."

El congresista de Utah, Rob Bishop (R) introdujo la cuenta de ley de Seguridad Nacional, reclamando que las leyes locales y federales junto con descuidos han interferido con la seguridad fronteriza, citando que las áreas en la frontera están "repletas de actividad criminal."
