AUSTIN, Texas - Today is AARP's annual "Day of Service" - a call to action that began in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks mainly for AARP staff. It has since evolved into a day of volunteerism for anyone who wants to participate.

Rafael Ayuso, AARP of Texas communications director, explains the mission.

"We've been doing it now for 10 years, but it's basically a way that we and our volunteers and members give back to the community inspired by what happened on 9/11."

This year's theme is hunger, Ayuso says. Volunteers around the state are helping out at Meals On Wheels and food shelters. In central Texas, they'll be assisting the Capital Area Food Bank's efforts to feed families displaced by wildfires.

Addressing hunger is more important than ever in today's down economy, Ayuso says, adding that elderly Texans are especially vulnerable.

"Texas has the fourth-worst record in the country when it comes to seniors at risk of hunger, with 8.9 percent of its seniors at risk."

AARP has a website dedicated to matching volunteers to a wide variety of efforts, not all of which are hunger-related. It's a great way for people to try out volunteering in ways that interest them., Ayuso says

"They can help animal shelters, senior centers, they can be classroom aides, they can do some health and fitness volunteering, they can even help seniors with English as a second language - tutoring them."
