Rallies Take Toomey to Task on Tax Policy

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Rallies Thursday and today across the state are targeting U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., for his support of a policy unemployed Pennsylvanians say will only add to their ranks.

Toomey is proposing that U.S. companies be exempt from paying taxes on overseas profits.

Frank Wheeler, a computer specialist who lives outside Pittsburgh, has seen much of his contract work outsourced and says adding an incentive such as what Toomey is proposing would make a bad situation worse.

"Companies aren't expanding, they're sending everything out. So, there's no chance for growth here in Pennsylvania and across the United States."

Wheeler, who now makes the majority of his income working at a convenience store, says companies with tight bottom lines shouldn't abandon the communities they call home.

"If they want cheaper labor, I'm pretty sure there's a lot of people around here that would just appreciate just having a job in their field."

Dan Haney, of the Philadelphia area, was making a decent wage with benefits at a prescription-processing center until things went south last year.

"This has affected me and 650 of my co-workers. Our jobs were outsourced to India and to the Philippines. That is not how we're going to build this economy. That is not how we're going to make America great again."

Toomey says he favors the territorial system because it levels the playing field for U.S. companies doing business abroad. He and other advocates say the current setup leaves American companies at a disadvantage because they face higher taxes than does their foreign competition.

Those taking part in the rallies in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg want Toomey to support President Obama's jobs plan and pay for it by ending tax loopholes and making big, profitable corporations pay their fair share of taxes.
