Promoting Farming & Habitat at Governor's Pheasant Opener

MONTEVIDEO, Minn. - The first-ever Governor's Pheasant Opener is this weekend in Montevideo. The Land Stewardship Project is using the event to showcase farming techniques that can help provide good habitat for birds and other wildlife. Organizer Terry VanDerPol says they'll tour one local operation that's leading the way, called Moonstone Farm.

"...Which is a perennial-based farm not too far from the hunting site that is very, very wildlife friendly. So, it's a farm that raises good food, it produces good profit for the farmers, and it also provides habitat for ground-nesting birds, including pheasants."

VanDerPol says right now, pheasant numbers are down 71 percent from the 10-year average. While part of that is a result of a couple of tough winters, he adds the loss of habitat is also to blame.

"If we want wildlife in this part of the state, we need to think about different strategies for keeping that wildlife healthy and, for ground-nesting birds, a well-managed grazing system can go a long way to providing excellent habitat."

The state lost 120,000 acres of Conservation Reserve Program land in 2011, says VanDerPol. He explains part of the reason is high corn prices, which allow farmers to make a profit by planting even on marginal land.

Moonstone Farm is owned and operated by Audrey Arner and her husband. She says they decided to make theirs a perennial operation and diversify, drawing inspiration from the great prairies.

"So, we have a lot of grassland that supports our grass-based cattle herd, pastures and hay fields, along with the matrix of woody plants, 42 different species that support wildlife habitat."

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Minnesota's upland bird hunting generates more than $120 million in annual retail sales and supports more than 2,300 jobs.
