Is CO Up to Healthy Schools Challenge?

DENVER - The challenge is on! Schools around Colorado are being asked to score themselves on how well they're making the connection between health and learning. The scorecard measures eight components of what's called the Coordinated School Health Model, from health education, nutrition and physical activities, to mental and physical health services for pupils and staff.

East Grand Middle School in Grandby took the challenge last year. District Wellness Coordinator Kathy Kopp says the school's four-day week meant children weren't getting all the PE they needed, so they coordinated movement breaks in the classrooms.

"What we're asking them to do is try to incorporate as much as possible, five minutes here and there, to just plug in that activity."

East Grand was one of 15 statewide to be named a Healthy Schools Champion, and got a $5000 grant to help continue its efforts. Schools can fill out the new 2012 scorecard between now and January 10 of next year at "healthyschoolchampions.org."

Community involvement is part of the challenge. Campo Elementary also was a Healthy Schools Champion last year. School business manager and Health Coordinator Coantha Johnson says one of its advantages was its location.

"Being such a small community, the school is the hub of the community. If we were to lose the school, I don't know what would happen to the town of Campo."

And Johnson has advice for schools taking the challenge this year.

"Don't forget everything you're doing. The other schools may already be doing good things that they don't even think about because it's just part of their routine."

Kathy Kopp says even if schools don't win, the challenge itself is invaluable.

"The scorecard is an awesome tool that lets everybody around the table discuss each of the Coordinated School components."

The challenge goal is to recognize successful models that other schools can replicate.
