LARAMIE, Wyo. - Old brains can be taught new tricks.

That's one of the positive messages being highlighted in a Wyoming PBS documentary airing Thursday night, which will be followed by a call-in show titled "The Surprising Life of the Grown-Up Brain."

New research shows that old brains can be taught new tricks, says Casper neurologist Dr. David Wheeler, and keeping busy keeps brains healthy.

"We know that people who spend more time in educational pursuits, are more socially active (and) very engaged in their work pursuits or their hobbies seem to do better as they get older. Their brains don't seem to age as quickly as people who don't take care of themselves that way."

The documentary, "Gray Matters: Exploring the Mature Mind," was produced by the Wyoming Geriatric Education Center.

Wheeler is among the experts who will be answering viewer questions, as is Wyoming Health Fairs exercise physiologist Alice Burron. Her focus is on research which shows how the body really is connected to the mind.

"We're seeing great improvement even with a small amount of activity, and that is encouraging to many. Often, we think our brains are declining with age, but we can counter that."

AARP Wyoming has held similar "Gray Matters" workshops around the state, which have been so popular that 100 people were on the most recent workshop waiting list. The call-in show offers a way for more people around the state to get involved.

The documentary will air 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by the call-in show at 7:30. Questions can be called in at 1-800-495-9788 or e-mailed in advance at wy@aarp.org.
