Fifth Annual "Stock the Shelves" to Benefit Arrowhead Food Shelves

ST. PAUL, Minn. - More and more people across Minnesota are in need of help putting food on the table, and a charitable event tonight will help fill the pantries in the Arrowhead region in the northeast part of the state. The 5th Annual "Stock the Shelves" event is to be held at The Liffey in St. Paul, hosted by Hunger Solutions Minnesota and State Senator Tom Bakk. Governor Mark Dayton will be there along with Vikings defensive end Jared Allen.

Carol Voss, executive director of the Hibbing Food Shelf in that Arrowhead community, says they're now helping around 550 families a month.

"Last year, we had, I would say, around 400, but it's climbing every day. We're getting new ones in every day, and it's just getting worse."

Voss says a big part of the increase in food shelf usage has been among those who do have jobs.

"We classify 'em as the 'working poor.' They're working, but they ain't making much money up here at all, and it's not getting any better. You pay your rent plus your utilities, you can't afford to go out and buy food."

Of particular concern, says Voss, is the number of children who aren't sure where they'll get their next meal.

"We've got families from, like, one in a family all the way up to 11 or 12 in a family, and most of them are kids. And that's what I'm worried about: the kids are not getting healthy foods."

Between January and August of this year, there were a quarter-million visits to Arrowhead regional food shelves.
