Millionaires Tax Campaign Targets Kim Kardashian

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian is being targeted by the backers of a proposed ballot initiative to increase taxes for the wealthiest Californians. The Courage Campaign has released an online video that claims even though Kardashian made more than $12 million in 2010, she only paid 1 percent more in taxes than a middle-class Californian.

"That doesn't make any sense. She can certainly afford to pay a few more percentage points in taxes and make sure that the society that gives her the opportunity to make all this money still exists."

Courage Campaign founder Rick Jacobs says they have yet to hear from Kardashian, and that she is just one of the 41,000 Californian millionaires who should be paying their fair share. The Millionaires Tax Act of 2012 would raise income tax rates by 3 percent for those making more than $1 million a year, and by 5 percent for those making more than $2 million. The measure would raise an estimated $6 billion dollars a year for public education and vital public services.

Jacobs says the Great Recession, along with many years of inadequate tax rates on the rich, have resulted in budget cuts of $20 billion over the last three years to public education, health and safety.

"That's crumbling in California and the only way we're gonna reverse that tide is by starting to say, 'Okay, folks, pay your share.'"

The California Federation of Teachers and California Calls are also sponsors of the measure. The groups are aiming to put the Millionaires Tax initiative on the November ballot. Several other tax reform measures are also vying for a spot, including Gov. Brown's proposal to temporarily raise taxes on the wealthiest and increase the sales tax for all Californians.
