Entrenadores se distinguen usando tenis para concientizar sobre el cáncer

INDIANAPOLIS – Entrenadores deportivos de todo Indiana ayudan a despertar conciencia y recabar fondos para la American Cancer Society (Sociedad Americana del Cáncer) vistiendo un singula atuendo durante los juegos nocturnos, además de apoyar los esfuerzos de sus escuelas por obtener recursos.

Son más de cien los entrenadores deportivos que se distinguen porque toman parte en la lucha contra el cáncer usando en los juegos traje y corbata, pero también tenis. La iniciativa Entrenadores de Traje y Tenis Contra el Cáncer ("Coaches vs. Cancer, Suits and Sneakers Initiative") durará todo febrero y se extenderá a todo el estado).

Butch Zike, director de atletismo de la Whiteland Community High School, dice que también los maestros del distrito participan en diversas actividades para recabar fondos.

"Los profesores podrán pagar cinco dólares, el miércoles 25 de enero, por usar jeans en la escuela. Y eso normalmente recaba algo más de mil dólares."

Zike afirma que los esfuerzos por obtener recursos incluyen de todo, desde hacer tiros de tres puntos hasta donaciones conseguidas por porristas. Agrega que él mismo hará una donación en memoria de su madre, quien falleció víctima del cáncer de páncreas.

Comenta que Entrenadores contra el Cáncer es también una excelente herramienta de enseñanza.

"Es una manera de que nuestros niños entiendan la importancia de devolver algo a la comunidad; una pequeña lección de filantropía. Y eso es lo que pienso, que todos estamos juntos en esto tratando de encontrar una cura para esta enfermedad."

Kimberly Williams, de la American Cancer Society (Sociedad Americana del Cáncer), supervisa la iniciativa Entrenadores Contra el Cáncer en colaboración con la Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (Asociación de Entrenadores de Baloncesto de Indiana). Explica que cada escuela elige la manera de participar y recabar fondos.

"Tiros de tres puntos, harán subastas silenciosas,... es decir, depende un poco de qué tan involucrada esté la escuela en esto. Pero ningún esfuerzo es demasiado pequeño y cada dólar recibido realmente marca una diferencia. Tan solo invitamos a las escuelas a que encuentren qué les funciona."
