NEW BERN, N.C. - The fight to curb childhood obesity has inspired at least one group of North Carolina teachers to drop pounds of their own.

The Shape NC program offers support to help child-care providers around the state improve physical activity and nutrition for children, with a goal of prompting healthier habits for the youngsters and their families.

After Excel Learning Centers in New Bern began participating in Shape NC, school owner Zac Everhart said they soon realized it should be a school-wide effort.

"We just felt like that if we were going to ask kids to be in better shape and eat correctly, that we really need to go to where it started - and that was with our staff."

Everhart says 70 school staff members have dropped a total of 302 pounds since Nov. 1. Several teachers have told him the centers' "biggest loser" competition has changed their lives, inspiring them to do more to get in shape.

Excel is one of about 20 early-learning centers across the state which are participating in Shape NC. The program helps teachers improve outdoor play and encourage physical activity. Since North Carolina has the nation's 11th highest childhood-obesity rate, Everhart says his employees took the lessons of the program to heart.

"Parents come to us every day to teach their children - and not just teach them how to write their name or learn their ABC's. We've got to teach them in all realms."

Shape NC is a collaboration between the North Carolina Partnership for Children and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation. The program began last year with eight communities and is expanding this year into 10 more: in Alamance, Alexander, Anson, Carteret, Chatham, Iredell, McDowell, Mecklenberg, Mitchell-Yancey and Wayne counties.
