Helping Eligible Minnesotans Get the Food They Need

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Helping some 90,000 Minnesotans put food on the table is the goal of a new campaign kicking off today.

The coordinated outreach effort will seek out those people who are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program but not enrolled, according to Colleen Moriarty, executive director of Hunger Solutions Minnesota.

"We've been more successful at getting people aware of the fact that they are eligible for SNAP benefits, but we have a long way to go and this is an effort to really get there, with a real push on this information."

A big part of the campaign will be focused on the elderly, Moriarty says. Two in five seniors in the state who are eligible for food support receive those benefits, she says.

"If their income is less than $1,498 a month, they may be eligible to get SNAP benefits, which will help them buy groceries and stay in their homes longer, and have their medication work better - and just live a more vital life."

Moriarty says the other group to be targeted is the unemployed, who number around 170,000 despite some improvements in the jobless rate.

"We still are seeing people who have to visit the food shelf to be able to make it through the month. And the people who are re-employed are reporting back that they're being re-employed at a lesser salary than they had when they started."

More than 500,000 Minnesotans receive food-support benefits each month, but that's only a portion of those eligible to take advantage. More information is online at mnfoodhelpline.org or by calling 888-711-1151.
