ALBUQUERQUE – A sure sign that tax season is underway is that the doors have opened at more than 40 AARP Tax-Aide sites around New Mexico, a program sponsored by the AARP Foundation and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Lee Long, AARP Tax-Aide volunteer coordinator, explains how Tax-Aide volunteers help out at this time of year.

"We are trained, certified according to IRS rules and we do taxes. We provide tax services to low- and moderate-income taxpayers, and it's all free."

Tax-Aide will assist people of any income, although Long explains it was designed for lower-income taxpayers. One benefit they'll be steering people toward in New Mexico is the state's low-income comprehensive rebate for residents who earn less than $22,000 a year.

A person doesn't have to be a member of AARP or over age 50 to have their taxes done by Tax-Aide volunteers - although not all forms and schedules are covered by the free service, explains Long.

"We do the basic 1040. We do Schedule A, the itemized deductions. We do small businesses; we have a limitation of $10,000 for expenses."

Long says the program also includes tax preparation for people whose income is from Social Security, retirement pensions, or Individual Retirement (IRA) and 401-K accounts.

The Tax-Aide program began in 1968 and just a few years after that, she says, it took root in New Mexico.

"There was a gentleman here in Albuquerque who set up a card table and started helping people do their tax returns."

From that card table, the IRS Volunteers in Tax Assistance (VITA) program arrived in the state - and after that, came the AARP Tax-Aide program. Find a Tax-Aide location by calling 1-888-AARP-NOW, or online at aarp.org/taxaide.
