Texas Immigrant Advocates Coordinate Efforts

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – With comprehensive immigration reform efforts stalled for the time being, the Texas immigrant community needs a central clearinghouse for both practical and political information, according to such immigrant advocates as the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. MALDEF will launch just such a site today, along with a bipartisan coalition of 25 faith-based, business and advocacy groups.

CommonSenseImmigrationTX.org will provide a wide range of bilingual information for Texas residents regardless of their immigration status, says MALDEF legislative attorney, Luis Figueroa.

"What resources are available out there: tools, fact sheets, and information about where they can receive services. For instance, they might want to know what English classes are available, or where they can find an immigration attorney."

He says members of mixed-status Texas families might want to learn how to weigh in on legislative battles, or become more active in their communities.

The political divide over how to reform the country's immigration system pits those who say nothing should be done until enforcement is improved against those who are calling for simultaneous efforts to address all aspects of what Figueroa thinks is a badly broken system.

"Families are split apart, workers are penalized even though they're offered jobs, businesses are reliant on undocumented workers; so we know we need reforms, but the reforms need to come on the federal level in a comprehensive way."

He's critical of repeated efforts by the Texas Legislature last year to pass laws that he says would have imposed federal immigration enforcement duties on state officials - laws he believes would have been harmful to local law enforcement agencies and businesses. He says the new website will track similar bills in the future, and coordinate efforts to pressure lawmakers to focus instead on the need for national reform.

CommonSenseImmigrationTX.org is scheduled to go live on Wed., March 7.
