DES MOINES, Iowa – Cada año surgen aproximadamente 19 millones de casos nuevos de infecciones de transmisión sexual en los Estados Unidos, costando unos $17 billones en gastos médicos. La razón principal es porque la gente joven sexualmente activa no se dan cuenta que están infectados.

Abril es el mes en el que todos los proveedores de cuidado de salud se enfocan en eliminar este ciclo de infecciones, al animar a que los jóvenes sexualmente activos se hagan un chequeo. Jenna Carlson, educadora de salud para el Planned Parenthood del Heartland dice que es un tema de gravedad hacia la salud pública.

“Si eres sexualmente activo, una de cada dos personas menores de 25 años contrae una enfermedad sexualmente transmitida sin saberlo. Lo que queremos es que eso cambie para que las personas no tengan miedo y vengan a las clínicas a hacerse un chequeo.”

Añade que las clínicas de Planned Parenthood en todo el estado tienen la capacidad para hacer estos chequeos, y la mayoría solo requieren un análisis de orina.

“La mayoría de las infecciones tienen un tratamiento. Con tanta infección bacterial, un simple antibiótico es suficiente para curar la infección. Todos los virus son para siempre, así que esos puede que los tengas de por vida.”

Carlson concluye que chequeos regulares, servicios preventivos, y decisiones saludables son los elementos más importantes para reducir el gran número creciente de enfermedades de transmisión sexual.
