AARP ataca la inseguridad alimentaria que viven los residentes mayores de Arizona

PHOENIX – Aproximadamente 175,000 personas de edad avanzada encaran inseguridad alimentaria día tras día. El AARP ha lanzado la campaña para recolectar alimentos “Compartir es Vivir” que además busca concientizar sobre esta situación al ayudar a aliviar el problema. El director de alcance comunitario con el AARP de Arizona David Parra, dice que desde el año 2007, la crisis económica ha impactado seriamente la nutrición de los mayores.

“Tu sabes, uno no piensa que existe este problema en nuestro país. Pero sondeos demuestran que a nivel nacional existen casi 9 millones de personas mayores de 50 años que enfrentan inseguridad alimentaria todos los días.”

En el área del Condado de Maricopa, el AARP de Arizona busca voluntarios que puedan ayudar a que las personas mayores apliquen para SNAP, el programa de asistencia alimentaria, anteriormente conocido como estampillas de comida. Parra dice que voluntarios deben tener experiencia con computación y se les requerirá atender un curso de entrenamiento de un día.

Parra añade que uno de los sitios en los que estarán como voluntarios es en los bancos de alimentos, dónde podrán asistir a personas mayores en el proceso de aplicación si requieren de ayuda.

“También ofreceremos asistencia en centros de personas mayores y comunidades de personas jubiladas, los voluntarios se hacen disponibles para responder a preguntas sobre quien califica, y ayudarles a llenar la aplicación de manera completa.”

Gracias a los esfuerzos conjuntos del Banco de Alimentos St. Mary's y la Coalición Central Arizona Kinship Care, otra parte de la campaña “Compartir es Vivir” involucra asistencia temporal para abuelos y abuelas que están a cargo de la crianza de sus nietos.

“A los abuelos y abuelas se les hará disponible una caja de alimentos con varios productos como leche, cereal y jugos.”

Parra comenta que el esfuerzo inicial proveerá 10 cajas a 100 familias durante el resto del año. Se están recaudando más fondos para poder expandir el programa hacia el año entrante.
