LONGMONT, Colo. - A Colorado craft brewer was concerned with more than just balancing hops and pouring "flights" of beer samples this weekend. Longmont's Left Hand Brewery hosted a film fundraiser for the Colorado-Wyoming chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The event included a silent auction, a screening of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," and a chance to sample Left Hand products such as Sawtooth Ale and Milk Stout.

Left Hand's vice president of operations, Chris Lennert, says their goal is to raise $150,000 for MS by the end of June, and they're just about halfway there.

Their inspiration? A customer with MS.

"We saw him go from a walker to a wheelchair to hand controls in his van. We're a big believer in giving back, but when it's personal like that, for us it's just doing the right thing."

The MS summer fundraising drive began earlier this month with the Denver MS Walk. Fourteen other walk-athons are on the schedule, including the Boulder MS Walk this Saturday, May 19. The Colorado-Wyoming chapter of the MS Society hopes to raise $1.8 million from the walks alone.

David Ballowe was at Saturday's event. He's been participating in MS fundraisers for 27 years: in his case, he bikes to help find a cure, and is one of the top fundraisers for Left Hand's Bike MS team.

"If you don't ask, people can't even say no. So I give everyone a chance to donate. You know, I got five dollars at the bank this morning from a lady who found out we were having this fundraiser."

Left Hand's Lennert says the Left Hand bike team is 115 riders strong. He thinks giving back to the community is - in the name of one of Left Hand's brews - good juju.

"If we get other people involved and they can reach 50 and 60 people, wow, that reach is incredible. And that's our goal. "

Left Hand's Bike MS team will hit the road for the two-day challenge in late June. Other MS fund-raising events include a hiking fundraiser and "Muck Ruckus," a mud and water challenge course fundraiser.
