Californians are getting a chance to have their voices heard in the debate about health care and retirement security.

AARP's "You've Earned a Say" community forums are being held across the state beginning this week.

Nancy LeaMond, AARP executive vice president for social impact, says the "listening sessions" are designed to take the Medicare and Social Security debates out from behind closed doors in Washington.

"Where politicians continue to talk about Medicare and Social Security as line items in a budget without talking to the American people about what any changes to these programs could mean for them and their families."

Research has found that only about half of AARP members are confident Medicare and Social Security always will be there, LeaMond says, and less than one in five say they are "very confident" these programs would continue throughout their retirement years.

LeaMond says Social Security and Medicare are the foundation of retirement security for millions of Americans.

"With millions of future retirees struggling with lost pensions and savings, lower home values and higher health-care costs, it's time to change the conversation about Medicare and Social Security in Washington."

The community forums begin Thursday in Oakland. More will be held this weekend in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and next week in San Diego and Sacramento.

People interested in attending a "You've Earned a Say" event can call 1-866-838-2838 or visit earnedasay.org for more information.
