BISMARCK, N.D. - Reforms needed to strengthen Social Security and Medicare are the focus today at the Washington offices of North Dakota's congressional delegation.

Janis Cheney, AARP North Dakota state director, is on Capitol Hill to share comments her organization has received from people across the state in the past couple of months. She says North Dakotans have been very engaged and understand how critical these programs are to those who now are receiving benefits.

"They also have significant concerns for the next generation and the ones after that. Recognizing that in these days of changing economies and pensions that are going away, people are going to need Social Security and Medicare even more."

AARP North Dakota already has held more than 20 events and circulated more than 1,500 questionnaires as part of the group's "You've Earned a Say" campaign. Cheney says one common theme has emerged: Many feel that nothing is getting done when it comes to the future of Social Security and Medicare.

"People have expressed extreme frustration about the state of things in Washington, and have indicated their significant desire for our congressional representatives to start talking to each other and coming up with viable solutions."

For those concerned about Social Security and Medicare, Cheney says, the time to speak out is now.

"This is our future and we can influence what happens, with these programs and with other programs. It is absolutely critical, it is our responsibility as citizens, to be as actively involved and as constructively involved as we possibly can be."

More than 120,000 people in North Dakota receive Social Security benefits, and about 95,000 seniors count on Medicare to help them afford health care.
