In Wisconsin, We Tend To "Super-Size" Everything We Eat

MADISON, Wis. - Our national bad habit of overeating is really evident in Wisconsin, says Marianne Merrick, a registered dietitian at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison. Many over-eat because we have a 24/7 food culture and easy access to high-calorie food, she explains.

"That and soda consumption - those things make it very difficult for people to not engage in bad eating behaviors, when everywhere you go you have access to really unhealthy food."

Some say overeating is an addiction, but Merrick says it's difficult to categorize it that way. In Wisconsin, she says, one big problem is portion sizes: They're huge!

"They're really big enough for two people, in most cases. So, thinking about that, if you're out to eat, you can share something. I also tell people to ask the server if they can have a box with their meal, and automatically put half their meal into that box and take it home with them to have the next day."

Merrick says we need to recalibrate what we think of as a serving, using visual cues. For example, a deck of cards is the size of a 3-ounce serving of meat, or four dice are a measure for a serving of cheese. The American Heart Association website, www.heart.org, also has great tips on heart-healthy nutrition, she says.

Overeating is a dangerous habit when it comes to heart health, Merrick warns, adding that if we could cut the rate of obesity, we could reduce heart disease. She urges parents and others to change what they feed children.

"It really comes down to parents and what they have in the house. We need to go back to basics with food and eat whole, fresh foods that do not come in boxes, cans and packaging - like chips and all that stuff."

Merrick says changing the way we regard portion sizes and the foods we choose can be a daunting task, but making changes one step at a time will increase the odds of becoming a healthier eater and avoiding the risks of obesity.
