INDIANAPOLIS - Hunger is getting worse - not better - in Indiana. That's why NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon is teaming with AARP and the Drive to End Hunger.

AARP spokesman Jim Dau says 20 percent of older Hoosiers reported struggling to pay for food in the past year.

"Across the country there are 9 million people, ages 50 and over, who face the threat of hunger every day. These are people that, in many cases, they've done all the right things and yet today they still struggle to put food on the table."

Dau says AARP will be raising awareness at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday.

"Come and visit the Drive to End Hunger mobile experience. We go across NASCAR Nation to different race tracks, allowing people to have this really fun, interactive way to learn about the issue of older-adult hunger."

Cindy Hubert, president and chief executive of Indiana's largest food bank, Gleaners, which serves 21 counties in central and southern Indiana, says the economy continues to drag Hoosiers down.

"There's been a 13.6 percent drop in median household income just in the last decade. It's the second largest in the nation. So, if people don't have money, they can't purchase food."

Hubert is seeing an increase in the young and old needing food assistance...

"We have an awful lot more seniors in line, and many times they're standing there with multi generations. So, they're bringing up the 10 or 11 grandchildren."

Gordon is eyeing his fifth Brickyard 400 win this weekend. He won his first race at Indy in 1994's inaugural Brickyard 400.
