COLUMBUS, Ohio - Getting shots at the doctor's office is never fun for children or their parents, but experts say immunizations are critical to protect everyone from serious disease and illness. To enroll in Ohio schools, children need a series of shots by age 6 to protect against measles, polio, chicken pox and hepatitis. Additionally, all students entering grade seven need a T-dap booster immunization, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.

Dr. Amy Guiot, assistant professor at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, says while there are exceptions, most vaccinations produce immunity 90 percent to 100 percent of the time.

"When is the last time you heard about polio? You don't, because it works that well. Same thing with diphtheria and tetanus - you don't even see those illnesses out there anymore, if they've been vaccinated."

Although not required by the state, Guiot says it is also important for all children and their parents to receive an annual flu shot. Another non-required shot she recommends for both male and female pre-teens is the the HPV vaccine, to prevent the Human Papoloma Virus.

Guiot says immunizations not only protect a child's health, but also the health of others - including those most at risk of getting seriously ill, such as infants or the elderly. Her advice for anyone concerned about possible risks is to ignore any hype and do your own research.

"You've got to look at the good literature; you've got to be very careful what you read. Getting the facts is the most important thing, to help everyone take a deep breath and realize that this really is the right thing to do."

In Ohio, a student may be considered exempt from immunizations for reasons of conscience, religious convictions or medical reasons. August is National Immunization Awareness Month.
