Sandy to Suppress NY Voting?

YAPHANK, N.Y. - Some of the 700 schools and community centers around Long Island that serve as polling places on Election Day were damaged by last week's massive storm, and many more were left without electricity to power electronic voting machines. Suffolk County Board of Elections spokesperson Jesse Garcia says spotters were sent to survey the county's 342 sites.

"We've assessed if they are structurally able to receive the voting machines and whether or not they have power or generators on site."

LIPA estimated several hundred sites would not have power, and officials said some polling places would have to be relocated, others consolidated. Volunteer fire departments that have spare generators are being asked to lend them. The utility company is also asking for federal assistance to help get polling sites up and running.

In anticipation of long lines at some polling places, authorities remind voters that if they're in line when the polls close, they'll be allowed to vote. Amaya Tune with the AFL-CIO, which actively promotes voter rights, says exercising those rights may be one more hardship of the monster storm.

"If you get in a long line, you are eligible to vote as long as you are in the line, even if the polls close. So don't be discouraged. Definitely, stay in line until you're able to cast a vote."

Garcia says the election board set about trying to identify powerless polling places.

"We also reached out to Suffolk County Department of Fire Rescue Emergency Services to see if there are any volunteer fire departments that have generators available for our use on Election Day."

Tune says voters encountering problems of any kind can call the AFL-CIO's hotline, 866-OUR-VOTE.

"We have volunteers as well as attorneys staffing that line who can help troubleshoot any problems that voters may have on the day of the election."

Sandy claimed over 40 lives in New York, and left millions without power.
