Advocates Urge NV Delegation to “Heed Voters” on Fiscal Cliff

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - By only six weeks from today, Congress must act if it wants to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff." Local advocates say election night exit poll numbers provide an important message for the Nevada delegation.

Bob Fulkerson with Progressive Leadership of Nevada says exit poll numbers show Nevada tied Wisconsin as the state with the highest support for ending the Bush cuts for the wealthy. He hopes the members of the Nevada delegation heed that message as they negotiate to avoid the automatic "fiscal cliff" budget cuts and tax hikes for almost everyone that are scheduled to be triggered on New Year's Day.

"Sixty-four percent of Nevadans say it's time to end the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest. This shows that Nevada's not divided on this. Nevadans are overwhelmingly in favor of telling the wealthiest 2 percent that it's time to do their share."

Those exit poll numbers were compiled by the NBC "first read" newsletter (and highlighted locally on the Ralston Flash). While the exit poll shows Nevadans want the wealthy to do more, 51 percent of Silver State voters also think government should do less.

After meeting with President Obama on Friday, House Speaker John Boehner said Republicans are willing to consider additional revenues, but many in his party oppose raising taxes and ending tax breaks. Fulkerson says the stakes are high for Nevada.

"If Congress fails to repeal the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent, Nevadans are going to go longer without jobs, there's going to be worse budget cuts to education and health care and human services, people are going to be longer in 'underwater' homes."

Fulkerson predicts that all eyes will be on Nevada's new senator, Dean Heller. Heller was elected by a razor-thin margin, Fulkerson explains, and has pledged to take more moderate stands. Heller's vote on the Bush tax cuts will be the first major test of that pledge.

More information about the exit poll is available at NBCNews.com.
