Broad Support for a Hoosier Mass Transit Bill

INDIANAPOLIS - A bill that would allow Indiana cities and counties to decide if they want to establish mass-transit districts is making its way through the Legislature.

Bill author Jerry Torr, R-Carmel, says it would require a referendum.

"Voters would have the opportunity to weigh in and let local government know whether or not they want this transit authority set up."

House Bill 1011 was crafted with central Indiana in mind. Torr says Marion and Hamilton counties would likely be the first to move forward with a system called Indy Connect. He says there's broad support from mayors, young professionals, environmentalists and the elderly.

Driving is often an issue for older folks who want to remain independent in their homes. Irene Wegner, a volunteer for AARP Indiana, says public transportation is key for seniors who want to live independently.

"For them to be able to do that and still get to where they want to be and do what they want to do in the community - to be involved in community affairs - it's important for them to have a way of getting there and doing that."

Wegner, who is to testify Wednesday before the state House Roads and Transportation Committee, says having dependable public transportation for seniors is more cost-effective than maintaining a car.

"You have your insurance, you have your parking, you have your gas, you have your maintenance and upkeep. When you're a senior on a limited income, that really eats into it."

Transit Day at the Statehouse is set for Feb. 13.
