"America Saves" Week in New Mexico

SANTA FE, N.M. - Good things happen when Americans save. That's what the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) and the American Savings Education Council have found. In her House Joint Memorial to proclaim the "Year of Children's Savings Accounts" on Monday, state Representative Gail Chasey, Democrat of Bernalillo County, pointed out that asset poverty before age 11 has a negative effect on a child's academic achievement, and having a savings account changes expectations and behavior and improves academic performance.

According to Ona Porter, CEO of Prosperity Works, New Mexicans young and old can use this week to make saving a habit.

"Savings patterns really are established pretty early in life," said Porter. "So we're very concerned about how we can create that savings pattern for children and what that really means to them over a lifetime, what it means in terms of their expectations about what they can do in the future."

Porter said she hopes this week will increase awareness of savings and get people actively involved in a savings method. Prosperity Works launches a ten-week online financial education class, called Money Smart on Wednesday.

Rep. Chasey's House Joint Memorial 42 says that more than 25 percent of New Mexicans do not have sufficient savings or net worth to subsist at the federal poverty level for three months in the absence of income, and that 30 percent of New Mexico's children live in poverty. Those numbers paint a dim picture of New Mexico's financial future.

Ona Porter of Prosperity Works declared that making savings sexy may be the focus of some groups, but she's looking at a bigger picture.

"I think that we need to have some messages that savings is essential to the security and stability of our households," she said.

Katie Bryan, communications manager of America Saves, said that many Americans have developed a mental block about saving, even when they make as much as $100,000 a year.

"What we tell them is making that plan is that first step; envisioning what you want to save for and starting small," Bryan advised. "It can be just $5 a month. One way to really make that savings stick is to save automatically."

America Saves and the Department of Labor will hold a saving webinar for small businesses Wednesday, Feb. 27. Tweet-chats and other social media are also planned.
