BETHESDA, Md. - AARP is out with its aarp.org.
top 50 list of the best employers for workers age 50 and older - and the winner is right here in Maryland.

The National Institutes of Health, based in Bethesda, takes top prize for its efforts to retain, retrain and engage older workers. AARP Maryland program specialist Mike Kulick said there's no shortage of experienced workers at NIH.

"Forty-seven percent of NIH employees are over the age of 50," he said, "and the average tenure of employees that are age 50-plus there is about 18 1/2 years."

NIH also has a website listing employment opportunities exclusively for retired federal workers.

Kulick said other companies in the state can learn from the work culture at NIH.

"They provide a lot of ongoing access to retirement planning workshops and formally acknowledging employees upon their retirement," Kulick said. "Benefits and flexible work schedules are also a high benefit there."

Other 2013 winners include Scripps Health, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, S & T Bank and Michelin North America.

The complete list of AARP's top 50 employers is online at aarp.org.
